The village

Buxières-sur-Arce is located at the Arce river, on its right bank. The area along Arce is called the Arce valley, la Vallée de l’Arce.

The Buxières-sur-Arce commune covers 1043 hectares and has 132 inhabitants (as of 2013), referred to as Beureillons and Beureillonnes.

The vineyards in Buxières-sur-Arce are located on the right bank of Arce and are made up of slopes of varying directions from southeast to west, including some approximately south-facing slopes. Pinot Noir dominates greatly.

The current vineyard surface in the Buxières-sur-Arce commune is 43.4 hectares (107.2 acres). There are 35.3 ha Pinot Noir (81.3%), 7.9 ha Chardonnay (18.2%), and 0.2 ha Pinot Meunier (0.5%). Numbers from CIVC, as of 2013. In 1997, the vineyard surface was 25 ha. There are 26 vineyard owners (exploitants) in the commune.

Single vineyard sites

  • Bas de Biaunes, a west- to southwest-facing site immediately to the north of the village. Borders in the southeast to Vignes de Sorbée. Vouette & Sorbée has Chardonnay in this site.
  • Fonnet, a south-facing site directly to the westnorthwest of the village. Vouette & Sorbée has Pinot Blanc in this site, used for their Textures.
  • Vignes de Sorbée, a south-facing site directly to the northnortheast of the village. Borders in the west to Bas de Biaunes. Vouette & Sorbée has taken one half of its name from this site, and has Pinor Noir here, used e.g. for their Saignée de Sorbée.

Producer status is indicated where known: RM = récoltant-manipulant, or grower-producers. RC = récoltant-coopérateur, growers that are cooperative members but sell Champagnes under their own name.

  • Dames des Agis (RM)
  • Jacques Robin (RM), a member of the Vignerons Indépedants with 9.3 ha of vineyards in nine commune. The range includes a vintage Champagne.
  • Vouette & Sorbée (RM), a biodynamical producer with 5 ha of vineyards that has received attention for their quality and for a concentrated wine style. Run by Bertrand Gautherot, but the Champagnes are named for two of the vineyards, Vouette and Vignes de Sorbée. Has organic certification (AB) and biodynamic certification (Demeter) since 1998, and has produced their own Champagnes since 2001. All Champagnes are vinified in oak barrels and are shipped without dosage and with very little sulfur, i.e., they are “natural wines”. Fidèle is a 100% Pinot Noir from e.g. the site Vouette and contains a small amount of reserve wine. Blanc d’Argile is a 100% Chardonnay from e.g. the site (Bas de?) Biaunes. Argile means clay, by the way. Saignée de Sorbée is a rosé de maceration produced from Pinot Noir from the site Vignes de Sorbée, using grapes with a high ripeness. Textures is a 100% Pinot Blanc from the site Fonnet. The vintage is indicated on the label by “R” followed by the last two digits of the year, e.g. R11 = 2011, and the date of disgorgement is indicated. Gautherot recommends drinking them within two years of the disgorgement date due to the low sulfur content.
